Hillsboro Runway 13R & 13L
The construction for Runway 13R-31L is part of the Port of Portland’s Runway Safety Area Improvement Project. The runway safety area is the area at the end of a runway, serving to provide a measure of safety in the case of an aircraft veering off the main track. The existing runway will require intermittent closures during construction. Construction required the installation of the large diameter culvert to address the existing Glencoe Swale which bisected the runway safety area. The box culvert was over 500 ft in length, requiring over 40,000 bolts to assemble, and included cast-in-place headwalls. Other runway improvements included asphalt mill and inlay of Runway 13R-31L, removal of Exit A2, reconstruction of Exit A1, re-grading the northern runway safety area using onsite borrow material.
