Intern Andy Jonson

“As an intern for Kerr Contractors I was exposed to all aspects of heavy civil construction. I was part of a hard working team that worked their way through problems and deadlines on multiple projects. I learned that organization and communication is key to success. I received direct experience with Topcon GPS in the field and quantity takeoffs in the office. I was able to be a part of intersection closures which involved setting up construction detours and lane closures. Safety is the number one objective on Kerr’s projects. I had the opportunity to read the weekly safety meetings with everyone on site. Kerr Contractors has a large equipment fleet and keeping track of all the equipment on site helped the project managers plan for future projects. When it came time to finish up a contract, the small details became very important. Lateral boards for each individual lot had to be marked with depths and lot numbers. Street signs had to be nine feet tall if it was just a street name and seven feet if it included a stop sign. Stop signs had to be anchored three feet from the edge of curb so they didn’t get hit by trucks. My favorite part about being an intern for Kerr Contractors was working with everyone on site. I could ask any Kerr employee a question and they would always make time to explain the answer.”

Intern Nate Swan

“My internship at Kerr has been amazing in the amount of information and experience I gained over the short period of time. I was at Scouters Mountain a big dirt moving job with a ton of pipe & conduit to be laid for the 214 residential lots. Over that time I learned a lot about laying pipe, the cost of moving dirt, and operating heavy equipment. I really enjoyed the people I worked with always willing to lend a hand and answer any of questions I had!!!”
